Merseyside Recycling and Waste Authority takes the lead in waste disposal and promotes waste prevention, re-use and recycling across Merseyside.
We operate (via a contract with Veolia) 14 Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRC’s) to householders in the Merseyside area wishing to dispose of their own waste. The Recycling Centres are available for local residents to dispose/recycle their household waste. We also run a Permit Scheme at the Centres, asbestos disposal and hazardous waste disposal, as well as a Re-Use Shop at our South Sefton Recycling Centre. These are in addition to the waste collection and recycling schemes that are provided by individual local authorities. We are also responsible for seven closed landfill sites across Merseyside.
In December 2013 we signed off on a £1 billion Procurement Programme to deliver new waste treatment facilities and services for Merseyside and Halton. A consortium led by SITA UK has been appointed to the 30 year Waste Resource and Recovery Contract. This is final stage of a resource management project which will provide a sustainable and cost effective solution for 430,000 tonnes of municipal waste per year, which the Authority handles and which has not been recycled.
